Dr. Massumeh Farhad is chief curator and curator of Islamic art, Freer and Sackler Galleries, Smithsonian Institution.
Few archaeological discoveries in recent years have so radically changed our understanding of a region and a culture as the recently excavated objects on view in the exhibition Roads of Arabia. More than 200 works, some produced locally and others imported, illustrate the impact of both trade and pilgrimage on the material and economic culture of the Arabian peninsula for millennia. The speaker, also curator of Roads of Arabia, will discuss the groundbreaking exhibition and some of its iconic objects, ranging from mysterious stele and monumental sculpture to fragile glassware and vibrantly colored wall paintings.
