Closing Reception for July Artist-in-Residence Jeanine Briggs

July 30, 2010 - 6:00pm8:30pm

Transformations

Be prepared to see different things and see things differently, as you encounter the figurative art that Jeanine Briggs creates from reused and repurposed materials: life-size human figures, oversized chess individuals, small fertility and guardian figures, and various exotic life forms that inhabit our living planet—in reality or imagination. Just as Jeanine draws inspiration from nature and from cultural interpretations of the human experience, she welcomes your questions and comments, which in turn influence the direction of her work.  Jeanine invites all visitors to engage in the creation of an early 21st-century Detritussaurus.

Closing Reception for June Artists-in-Residence Michael Horse and Kim Shuck

June 25, 2010 - 6:00pm8:30pm

Over and Out Past the Lines: The Arts of Michael Horse and Kim Shuck

Beadwork, ledger art, and poetry are all social art forms, and all of them catalogue and describe the eras in which they are created. Michael and Kim intend to bring their voices and their communities into the Kimball Gallery and into an intense dialogue with one other and with the guests, structures, and collected works of the de Young Museum. Both artists actively seek reverence and irreverence in their process.

Silhouettes and Conversations: Articulating a Communal Vision

Alexandra Blum will trace silhouettes of visitors while listening to and recording their descriptions of artworks that are particularly meaningful to them in the permanent collection of the de Young. These silhouettes and the narrated descriptions of the work will form the basis of a mixed-media studio project consisting of drawing, silkscreen, collage, and paint. The artist's conceptual goal of the portraits is to humanize the private individual experience of viewing art and also transform it into a vision of a shared experience.
