Free Saturday Classes
Free Saturday classes, offered at both the de Young and the Legion of Honor, feature Doing and Viewing Art activities designed for children ages 4 through 12. Facilitated family tours of permanent collections and current exhibitions are followed by studio workshops taught by professional artist-teachers. Programs are held most Saturdays—please check the online calendar to confirm.
At the de Young, classes explore a variety of themes based on the permanent collections and exhibitions, including Hills, Trees, Sky and More: Discovering California Landscapes, Feeling Modern: Looking for Texture in Contemporary Art and Tribal Treasures. Programs from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the de Young are open to the public.
The Legion of Honor's collections are also highlighted in Saturday classes and have included programs such as Ancient Rainbows: Glass Vases from the Ancient Collection, Buried Treasures from Long Ago: Ancient Artifacts and The Power of Painting. Members only programs at the Legion of Honor are from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday classes are free after museum admission; a special exhibition surcharge may apply for adults to accompany the tours of certain sessions.
Space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. Sign in 15 minutes before the start of class. Programs begin promptly—no late admittance.
