Florence Gould Theater
1:00–2:00 p.m.
Vanessa Somers will present an illustrated talk on the art of mosaic making.
Artist demonstration
Gallery 12
2:30–3:30 p.m.
Artist Vanessa Somers will demonstrate cutting tiny tesserae out of different colors of marble with the traditional hammer and hardie and assembling them into a small picture. The artist also will be displaying her Asaraton mosaic.
After a first successful career in Paris as a painter on canvas, glass, and experimental media, Vanessa moved to Italy. There, she branched out into the art form that defined the Roman Empire: mosaics. Vanessa learned this art with Professor O. Anselmi, artistic director of the Vatican Mosaic Studio. She has taught and lectured at institutions around the world, including Corning Museum of Glass, Penland School of Crafts, Columbia Museum of Art, and the Getty Villa Museum. Vanessa's studio is in Rome, and she has had gallery shows in New York, Paris, Rome, London, Brussels, and North Africa. Her work belongs to private and corporate collections.
