This lecture gives a preview of the 2013 exhibition, Sicily: Art and Invention between Greece and Rome, at the Getty Villa. Innovation and experimentation flourished in ancient Sicily, an island crossroads that forged a distinctive Hellenic identity and occupied a pivotal position in Mediterranean history. Former Greek colonies emerged as wealthy city-states, and their art, architecture, theater, poetry, philosophy, and science left an original and enduring stamp on mainland Greece and Rome.
