“It has never been my object to record my dreams, just the determination to realize them.” – Man Ray

In conjunction with Man Ray | Lee Miller: Partners in Surrealism

The End of the Beginning, the Soundwave ((5)) Humanities’ Finale event, will be held in the grand outdoor courtyard at the Legion of Honor. More than 35 musicians and vocalists invite you to a surreal one-of-a-kind experience, coming together to celebrate our human triumphs, acknowledge our tragedies, and signal the beginning of a new collective future. The Beaux Arts building
overlooks the beginning of the world where the land meets the sea.

Sqwonk, the bass clarinet duo of Jeff Anderle and Jonathan Russell, signals the End of the Beginning of our brave new world. The 15-member experimental Oakland Active Orchestra assembles to deliver a cinematic score of our lives. And the stunning voices of the 20-member choral ensemble Volti evokes an explosion of energy, a glimpse into our future in a breathtaking and climactic new beginning.

Embodying the ideals of surrealist artist/photographer Man Ray, the event will unfold dreamlike, with choruses and orchestras calling on us to examine human notions of unity and division, rebellion and conformity, love and war.
