Leadership Circle, Patrons Circle, and exhibition sponsors are invited to the opening celebration of Early Rubens, featuring behind-the-scenes highlights with Kirk Nickel, assistant curator of European Paintings in the John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Theater beginning at 6:30 pm. Guests enjoy a cocktail reception and preview the exhibition before it opens to the public, celebrating the most innovative period of production for one of the most prodigious artists and extraordinary figures of the seventeenth century. Rubens came to dominate Flemish painting through a series of social and artistic choices that laid the groundwork for his international fame and established a visual style that would guide ambitious painters for generations to come.
