Join us for a day of film screenings highlighting Guo Pei’s fashion career journey, from the early beginnings to becoming China's most renowned couturier. Screenings include: Yellow is Forbidden, Mao’s New Suit, and our own short film Guo Pei: Embroidered Dreams

Complimentary Guo Pei-inspired pastries will be provided on a first-come first-served basis courtesy of Sunday Bakeshop.

About the Exhibition

Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy celebrates the extraordinary designs of Guo Pei and includes more than 80 works from the past two decades highlighting her most important collections shown on Beijing and Paris runways. Through exquisite craftsmanship, lavish embroidery, and unconventional dressmaking techniques, Guo Pei creates a fantasy that fuses the influences of China’s imperial past, decorative arts, European architecture, and the botanical world. Through her extraordinary fashions, the exhibition reveals the trajectory of Guo Pei’s career as remarkable yet emblematic of China’s emergence as a leader in the fashion world in the early twenty-first century.

Ticket Information

Seating is limited and unassigned. Tickets are distributed on a first-come first-served basis in front of the Gunn Theater an hour before each film begins. This does not include admission to the exhibition.

This documentary follows Beijing fashion designers Sun Jian and Guo Pei amidst the staging of their first designer collection in Shanghai’s annual fashion week. Mandarin with English subtitles.

Recognition from Paris’s Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture is considered the peak of fashion industry honors. Documentarian Pietra Brettkelly captures Guo Pei’s drive, artistry, and pursuit of the exclusive world of haute couture. Mandarin with English subtitles.

Through flashbacks, evocative imagery, and narration by Guo Pei, this film tells the designer’s story in her own words—from growing up during China’s Cultural Revolution and dreaming of beautifully embroidered dresses to presenting her designs on runways across the globe. An interview with curator Jill D'Alessandro takes you inside the Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy exhibition for a closer look at Guo Pei’s extraordinary designs and the impact she’s had on the fashion world. English and Mandarin with English subtitles.
