Live music by Friction Quartet
This event is expired.
Friction Quartet, whose performances have been called “terribly beautiful” (San Francisco Classical Voice), “stunningly passionate” (Calgary Herald) and “chillingly effective” (San Francisco Examiner), exists to expand the string quartet repertoire and audience for adventurous contemporary music. Since forming in 2011, Friction has given 63 world premieres and commissioned 30 works. The ensemble opened for Kronos Quartet, in Kronos’ “Under 30” series, and received a grant from SFFCM to commission a new work from Mark Winges. Friction was selected as one of eleven artists featured in the SF Bay Guardian’s 2014 “On the Rise” issue.
While Friction has garnered international attention for commissioning and interpreting new music, they are also devoted to performing masterworks of the string quartet repertoire. The quartet was awarded the 2012 Berkeley Piano Club Award; was a finalist in the 2015 Fischoff Competition; and placed second at the 2015 Frances Walton Competition and the 2016 Schoenfeld International Chamber Music Competition. Friction has participated in the St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar, the Banff Chamber Music Residency, the Deer Valley Music Festival, and recently made its Carnegie Hall debut as part of the Kronos Quartet Workshop.
