The Legion of Honor transports you to London, England, during the time of Oscar Wilde for a look at the Aesthetic Movement. See how a rebellious group of young artists changed the culture with their vision of “art for art’s sake” as examined in the special exhibition The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde 1860–1900. Don’t miss an exclusive series of programs featuring music, costumes, hands-on art making, and more, presented on select Saturdays and Sundays throughout the exhibition. The dates of the series are 2/18, 2/26, 3/11, 3/18, 4/8 and 5/12.
Visions of Beauty—Inside the Victorian Artists Salon
Galleries 8,10 & 12
noon–3 p.m.
You are invited to a special day in the Artists Salon when we reanimate the personalities of the Victorian avant-garde. Sit down and gaze into the eyes of Elizabeth Siddal and converse with William Morris! The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood Artists Salon brings the Legion of Honor galleries to life while you take your turn at sketching models. Become a fan of the Pre-Raphelite Society on Facebook.
The day's programs also include special guests from Dark Garden Corsetry in San Francisco's Hayes Valley neighborhood. Learn about the evolution of Victorian fashion from corsets to the Aesthetic ideal. Representatives and artisans will be on site to teach you about the histories of women's and men's fashions in the era.
