During the opening day festivities for The Summer of Love Experience: Art, Fashion, and Rock & Roll, ten cultural organizations in San Francisco came to celebrate and share their causes with the community. In the spirit of the peace and love, we asked members of some of these organizations: what’s one action I can take today to make a difference?
The Stud, one of the city's most renowned nightclubs, had a fun-first approach to making a difference: "Get off your computer, go outside, and mingle with your community! Local bars, nightclubs, and businesses need your support more than ever to help retain the flavor and character of the city you love."
The GLBT History Museum, which is located in the Castro a few blocks away from Mission Dolores Park, suggested that we recognize and respect the vibrant history of the city. "Notice and celebrate the sheer amount of history all around you. Everything from the smallest bit of architecture to the name of your street has a story to tell, especially in the Bay Area."
Causa Justa: Just Cause, an organization fighting against displacement and gentrification in the Bay Area, advocated for even more direct social involvement: "Organize and build the leadership and protagonism of working-class Black and Latino communities to fight for immigrant and housing rights!"
And according to the Blue Bear School of Music, it’s critically important to “relay the message [that] music changes lives.” Anything else? “Smile. That is the short answer.”
Writers from 48hills, "the progressive daily that San Francisco has always needed," offered up this advice:
"Stay informed and learn how to read critically -- your knowledge can help build a movement!"
